How to Plan a Petroleum Laboratory Testing Workflow
Petroleum product analysis involves more than choosing instruments one by one. A useful laboratory setup starts with the sample types, required test methods and daily workload, then organizes work from sample preparation through physical-property, fuel-characteristic, chemical and instrumental analysis. This staged approach helps teams plan a practical petroleum laboratory testing workflow and identify which equipment belongs at each step.
A Five-Stage Workflow for Petroleum Testing
1. Prepare samples consistently
Sample preparation is the starting point for reliable laboratory work. FA2204 and FA2204B analytical balances support sample weighing, the OS40-Pro overhead stirrer supports mixing and preparation, and the TD5BS tabletop low-speed centrifuge can support routine sample separation. Select the preparation procedure and accessories to match the sample and the applicable test method.
2. Measure physical properties
Physical-property tests form a core part of many petroleum testing programs. The instruments below cover density, kinematic viscosity, color, flash point and low-temperature behavior. Confirm the required method and instrument configuration for each test before specifying a system.
| Test area | Instrument and model | Method and application |
| Density | Petroleum Density Tester PPDT-500 | Hydrometer method for crude petroleum and liquid petroleum products (GB/T 1884-2000; ASTM D1298). |
| Kinematic viscosity | Kinematic Viscosity Tester KVT-265H | Gravity flow through a calibrated glass capillary at constant temperature (SY/T 5651; GB/T 265; ASTM D445). |
| Petroleum color | Petroleum Products Color Tester CT-0168(P) | Visual comparison with a standard color dial for petroleum products (SH/T 0168-92). |
| Closed-cup flash point | Flash Point Tester FPT-261D | Pensky-Martens closed-cup method (GB/T 261-2008; ASTM D93). |
| Open-cup flash point | Flash Point Tester FPT-OC92 | Cleveland open-cup method (GB/T 3536-2008; ASTM D92). |
| Low-temperature properties | Pour Point Tester PP-510F1 | Determination of pour point, cloud point, solidifying point and cold filter plugging point (GB/T 510; GB/T 3535; GB/T 6986; SH/T 0248; ASTM D97; ASTM D2500). |
